Breaker Keeps Tripping in Wichita, KS
A breaker that trips is doing its job: stopping too much current on a circuit. When it keeps happening, something on that circuit needs attention. Here is how to narrow it down.
Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?
A breaker trips to protect the wiring from overheating. One trip after plugging in a space heater is an overload. Repeated trips, or a breaker that will not reset, point to a problem that needs an electrician. Midwest Mechanical finds the cause and gives you the price before we fix it.

Common causes
- Overloaded circuit: too many high-draw devices on one circuit, such as space heaters, hair dryers, microwaves or window units.
- Short circuit: a hot wire touching a neutral or another hot wire, often in a damaged cord, outlet or fixture.
- Ground fault: current leaking to ground, common in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoor outlets.
- Arc fault: loose or damaged wiring that an AFCI breaker detects.
- Failing appliance or motor: a sump pump, freezer, furnace blower or AC that draws too much current at startup.
- Worn breaker or full panel: breakers wear out, and older or crowded panels struggle with modern loads.
Safe checks you can do
- Note which breaker trips and what was running when it did.
- Unplug everything on that circuit, reset the breaker once, then plug items back in one at a time.
- If a GFCI outlet has tripped, press its reset button.
- Do not reset the same breaker over and over, and never tape or hold a breaker on.
Call right away if
- The breaker trips immediately with nothing plugged in.
- You smell burning, see scorch marks, or the panel or an outlet is warm or buzzing.
- Lights flicker or dim when appliances start.
- The breaker will not reset.
