Furnace Blowing Cold Air or Not Turning On in Wichita, KS
Cold air from the vents or a furnace that will not start usually traces to the thermostat, a dirty filter, an ignition or flame sensor problem, or a safety switch. Here is how to narrow it down.
Furnace Blowing Cold Air or Won't Turn On?
A furnace that blows cold air or will not start has usually shut itself down for a reason. Many causes are simple. Some are safety shutoffs that need a technician. Midwest Mechanical diagnoses the problem and gives you the price before any repair.

Common causes
- Thermostat: set to cool or fan "on" instead of auto, dead batteries, or a wrong schedule.
- Dirty filter: restricted airflow makes the furnace overheat and shut off the burners while the blower keeps running.
- Dirty flame sensor: the burners light, then shut off after a few seconds.
- Ignitor failure: the hot surface ignitor cracks or wears out and the burners never light.
- Gas supply: a closed gas valve or an interrupted supply.
- Blocked vent or condensate drain: high-efficiency furnaces shut down when the PVC vent or drain clogs.
- Power: a tripped breaker or the furnace power switch turned off.
Safe checks you can do
- Set the thermostat to heat, raise it a few degrees above room temperature, and set the fan to auto. Replace thermostat batteries.
- Replace the air filter if it is dirty.
- Check the furnace breaker and the light-style power switch near the furnace.
- Make sure the furnace door is fully closed. An open door keeps it from running.
- Outside, check that the PVC intake and exhaust pipes are not blocked by snow, leaves or nests.
Call right away if
- You smell gas. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- Your carbon monoxide alarm goes off.
- The furnace starts and stops repeatedly, or you hear banging, screeching or grinding.
- It still will not heat after the checks above.
