No Hot Water in Wichita, KS
Cold showers usually come down to a handful of causes: a pilot or ignition problem, a tripped breaker or failed element, sediment, or a heater at the end of its life. Here is how to narrow it down and when to call.
No Hot Water, or It Runs Out Fast?
When the hot water quits, or only lasts a few minutes, the water heater is telling you something. Most causes are repairable. Some mean the tank is near the end. Midwest Mechanical diagnoses the problem and gives you the repair price, or the replacement price, before any work starts.

Common causes
- Gas heaters: pilot out, a failed thermocouple or flame sensor, a bad gas control valve, or a venting problem that shuts the burner down.
- Electric heaters: a tripped breaker, a burned-out upper or lower heating element, or a failed thermostat.
- Hot water runs out fast: sediment filling the bottom of the tank, a broken dip tube, a failed lower element, or a tank too small for the household.
- Tankless heaters: scale buildup, an ignition fault, or a flow or venting error code.
- Only one faucet is cold: the problem is likely the fixture or its mixing valve, not the heater.
Safe checks you can do
- Electric: check the breaker for the water heater. If it trips again after a reset, leave it off and call.
- Gas: look through the sight glass for a flame. Follow the relighting instructions on the label only if you are comfortable doing it.
- Tankless: write down any error code on the display.
- Check the age on the label. Tank heaters past about 10 years are often better replaced than repaired.
Call right away if
- You smell gas. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- Water is pooling around the heater. See water heater leaking.
- The relief valve is discharging, or you hear loud popping or rumbling.
- A breaker trips again after one reset.
